Salt & Light is a ministry based on the book of Matthew.  In this book, Jesus instructs us a lot about the behaviors He wants to see modeled by His followers and that is what we are all about.  Our name came out of Matthew 5:13 “You are the Salt of the earth..” and Matthew 5:14 ” You are the Light of the world”.  So, we take that to heart. We come together for the sole purpose of sharing our light with the local homeless population.

Matthew 25:35 ‘For I was hungry, and you gave Me something to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave Me [something to] drink; I was a stranger, and you invited Me in; …and verse 40, of the same chapter,  “The King will answer and say to them, ‘Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did it to one of these brothers of Mine, even the least of them, you did it to Me.’

Our Salt & Light program is meal preparation once a month on the second Sunday of every month.  Every meal at the shelter consists of an entree, sides and vegetable, a salad and a dessert.  We start at 3:30 pm and begin serving at 4:45 pm.  We perform minimal cleanup and almost all the time we are on the way home by 7 pm. If you are not able to volunteer, we always need and appreciate donations of desserts.  Purchased or homemade, the desserts are a great way to support the ministry even if you cannot go in person.

If you are moved to join us, you do not need kitchen skills.  Just come and we will work together as a team.

How do I join you? You can sign up right here Salt & Light Schedule.

Do I need to bring anything with me?  Yes, you’ll need to bring a baseball cap, or you’ll have to wear a hair net (available there). And, if it is your first time, you’ll need a signed, and completed Volunteer Form.

What if I just want to donate desserts?  Best way to do that is to sign up on an available date, here: Salt & Light Schedule.  You can bring it with you to the church that day (please coordinate with the Captain for that day) or even drop it off at the shelter by 3:30 the day of.

My team (Life Group, New Commandment team, Bible Study, etc.) wants to sign up together.  What do I do?  Simply go to the Salt & Light Schedule and pick a month that works for your team; be sure to take ALL the spots for that month. You’ll always have a Captain assigned there to help you.  And, you have the choice of making what is scheduled or making something together in advance, and simply reheating that day.

Is this service limited to CRCC members only?  No, but at least 1 person must be a CRCC member.

Can my child help? Unfortunately, unless your child is 18 years old, the shelter doesn’t allow them in the kitchen.  But, there are other ways they can help, like making Brownies, Cookies, Cupcakes, or pies…

Where is the shelter located?  It is located at 11975 Bowman Towne Drive in Reston.
